| Automating Chkdsk In Windows 2k and XP |
| People should run chkdsk much more frequently than they do. In an effort to make the process occur more frequently, I'll show you how to make it an icon on your desktop. This technique works for Windows 2000 and for Windows XP. It will not work this way for Windows 9x or ME. Simply rightclick on an empty spot on your desktop and select New then Text Document ![]() Call it Fixdisk.txt or anything you like. Then Right click on your new file and select Edit. and type this line: chkdsk.exe ⁄f Save the file and close. Select the file again, Right click and choose RENAME. Change the .txt extension to .bat. When you rename the file, Windows will display this window. ![]() Say YES. You are actually making it work, not unusable. Your desktop icon should now look like this: ![]() Click on the Icon to run your new "program" and you'll get this window: ![]() Type Y for yes, Press ENTER and then reboot to run chkdsk and fix any disk errors you may have. You should run chkdsk this way a couple of times a month, and before doing Windows Updates. |
